Universal Net Worth
Net Worth.
It’s a measurement you hear about quite often in the business world to gauge a company’s success, or to measure personal success. Net worth is a financial driver that impacts a person or business’ ability to measure value.
Net worth is calculated by taking the net value of assets (what’s owned) minus the net value of liabilities (what’s owed.)
But are we using the right formula to really calculate the value of someone’s entire net worth accurately?
I would argue that my net worth to the world and to the people around me should include additional variables.
Variables such as emotional intelligence; kindness; awareness; thoughtfulness; and a willingness to share the assets that measure my financial net worth to create the exponential, positive impact on the world from that act of sharing.
The value of my financial net worth improves if I keep and grow my assets and minimize my liabilities.
But if there is a need in the world and good can be done by sharing assets toward that need or good, my act of sharing toward that need will reduce my financial net worth…but dramatically increase a new measurement that I would like to offer as something we should also consider.
I call it Universal Net Worth. Universal Net Worth is calculated by the positive impact I make in the world, or in someone’s individual life because I decided to share my assets.
I tried to think of how to specify an equation with variables to measure Universal Net Worth. But Universal Net Worth can never be accurately counted. It can never be accurately quantified. Because everyone’s Universal Net Worth is unique. It is the unique set of skills, passions and gifts that you were given at birth and how you use them for growth and to share with the world.
We can measure the impact of our Universal Net Worth by how it changes the life of the receiver in that instant, by the action of the receiver. The smile you create or the tears of joy you cause. But we may never know what that gesture did to change the trajectory of someone’s life, or more importantly, the trajectory of their legacy.
I am reminded of a story that my uncle told me. He was approached by a homeless person at a fast-food chain in his city. She asked for money to buy some food. He declined to give her money, but he took her inside to buy her a meal. Fast forward several years later and who does he run into in that same fast-food place? The formerly homeless woman was no in the same restaurant, well-dressed, employed and buying her own food.
But Universal Net Worth doesn’t have to be measured by financial donations alone. We can offer our time and our talent to a worthy cause. We can rescue a pet. We can adopt a child and give them a loving home. We can pick up litter at the park or the beach. We can offer a kind word; a hello to a lonely person; a phone call to support a friend; a hug. Or, we can improve our self-care and mental health to have a more positive attitude and energy to put into the world. All of these are Universal assets that we can share to increase our Universal Net Worth.
Think for a minute about what little changes you can make to your life to improve your Universal Net Worth. Do I really need to watch that re-run on television again, or can I take that negative screen time to call a friend, do a workout, walk my dog, or spend positive time with my family?
QUOTES ON UNIVERSAL NET WORTH
“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
Jane Goodall
“If every single person who has liked you in your lifetime, were to light up on a map, it would create the most glitteringly beautiful network you could imagine. Throw in the strangers you’ve been kind to, the people you’ve made laugh, or inspired along the way and that star-bright network of YOU would be an impressive sight to behold.
You are so much more than you think you are. You have done so much more than you realise. You’re trailing a bright pathway that you don’t even know about. What a thing. What a thing indeed.”
Donna Ashworth (Poet)
Love people loudly.
Tell them often.
Cheer them on as they go after their goals.
Hug them (if they like hugs) every chance you get.
No one ever got to the end of their life and thought, “I wish I’d left more people wondering about how much I cared.”
Lori Deschene (Author – “Tiny Buddha” book series)
TOM-ISM
“A hand is always stronger when it holds another.
Arms are always stronger when they embrace.
Shoulders are always stronger when they carry a child.
A mind is always stronger when it thinks of others.
A heart is always stronger when it loves unconditionally.
Look Up! Look Around! Your real net worth to the Universe is not just measured financially. It is measured in every good thing you do to put light into the world.
I LOVE YOU GUYS!
PEACE!
